Donate to Japan and other affected areas relief through groupon

Do you have credits? Put them towards helping others! Now you can donate to helping with the relief of places hit by the earthquake and tsunami on groupon. You can donate $5, $10, or $25.
To donate join groupon and then click the bar up top that says "Donate to support tsunami and earthquake relief in Japan and other affected areas."

"On Friday, March 11, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan. It was the most severe quake worldwide in more than a year and the worst ever recorded in Japan, with more than 50 aftershocks following in its wake and tsunami waves sweeping inland over both urban and rural areas. Countless individuals have been displaced, and families and friends struggle to contact each other with limited access to communications technology. The full extent of the disaster's effects on both the population and the landscape remain unclear, but the images that flash across screens all over the world are poignant indicators that its ramifications are severe, widespread, and long-term.

International Medical Corps, a group of health professionals dedicated to global support and relief, is dispatching response teams and supplies to mitigate the hardship and suffering that still await the people of Japan and other affected areas around the Pacific. A source of humanitarian aid for more than a quarter-century, International Medical Corps has provided vital assistance to struggling communities all over the world, including implementing relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and in response to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010. In cases of disaster, the organization can take measures such as establishing mobile clinics, coordinating hospital activity, and providing medical training to local residents. While estimates vary, the human toll of the disaster in Japan is expected to be extensive, and the services provided by organizations such as International Medical Corps are of critical importance.

Join G-Team and support International Medical Corps' emergency relief efforts in Japan and any other areas affected by the earthquake. Giving levels of $5, $10, and $25 are available. Every dollar facilitates the organization's work to aid the earthquake's victims and limit the extent of its devastation.

Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma."

Golden Eel- A Review and Giveaway (with 2 winners!)

I was given the opportunity to get and review a shirt of my choice from GoldenEel.com and today I received my shirt and its awesome! Golden Eel has a fun variety of shirts, journal, ipad and ipod cases, other knick knacks, and for you Dexter fans they have Dexter gear.

So I emailed Golden Eel and was very excited when they offered to let me review something from the store, in honor of Saint Patricks day, and in honor of my Scottish heritage, I selected this awesome blood splatter shamrock shirt.
About the shirt I got
I was advised the with it being fitted to get a size bigger, I will advise you when you shop there defiantly go a size bigger, I normally wear a large, and expected the xl to be roomy, it fits me perfectly. Im not complaining by any means the fabric is awesome and fits me nicely, just go a size up for any of the fitted shirts.

I got an email from the company on the 7th letting me know that my shirt was shipped, now I expected I would get it next week, but I was defiantly surprised 2 days later there it was in my mailbox, along with a receipt thanking me for reviewing and a nice card with advice for keeping my shirt looking its best after washing (cold water for darks, which I advise cold water for anything.)

The first thing I noticed as I mentioned before is the shirt does run small, the second was that while it runs small it is rather slimming. Seriously I dont know if its the color or the fabric but for a shirt it shows the right curves, and Im curvey that can be um.. complicated lol. Anyway I also noticed that the fabric is thin, not cheap then, but breathable good quality thin. On there site they have a meter on each shirt showing you how thin it is, this makes it a great shirt for the upcoming spring/summer days.

I really like the design on it the reds are a nice rich red not a faded red, and the design is true to picture, there is a slight outline on the design when you first get it but as the card that came with them says these disappear after the first wash.

About the Site
The site is easy to navigate, and has some great features for buyers. As I said before it has a meter on the site that shows you how thick the shirt is it also, allows you to see a pic of the shirt in every color they offer simply by clicking on the color, this really helped me decide which color to get. They are also very clear on what the shirt is made of. The customer service is great, and if there is any problem dont worry they have a 30 day money back gaurentee but I doubt you'll want to return the product.

About the company
Claudia Peña-Martinez moved from Larendo, TX to San Antonio, TX in 2001 pursuing an art degree. She graduated from UTSA in 2003 with a Bachlors of Fine Arts Degree. A year later, Golden Eel was born, as an avenue to promote her art and photography. However, her graphic design tees seemed to be more popular, especially during Halloween and Christmas. So, for the last two years she has been focusing more on creating fun and unique graphic designs that are great for people of all ages. Claudia gets her inspiration from a variety of influences such as, music, magazines, watching t.v., and movies. She sometimes even gets inspired while shopping at the grocery store. So when an idea pops up, she writes it down or sketches it out. Then a new design is born. Currently, GoldenEel.com is only a Web Based company, but hopes to open a local store in the near future.

They have a great variety of products, and nice quality stuff go check them out!

Here are some of my favorites.

Now for the really fun part how about a giveaway!

Child safety. What does that mean to you? I'll be honest, I'm one of those parents that leans more towards “she'll learn” than putting her in a bubble, but no matter where you as a parent sit on the scale of child safety, there is something that you WILL need. My Precious Kid LLC is an excellent company specializing in child safety items. Www.mypreciouskid.com is an amazing resource, with a blog updated with parenting and safety tips. Like My Precious Kid on Facebook and you can ask questions without being judged and get feedback from the store's owner and other parents!

As an Oregonian, I love to promote Oregon businesses, but more than being from Oregon, she is a helpful woman with great advice on everything from child-proofing anything in your house to cloth diapers and potty training. I have never been to her physical store in Hillsboro, but I have heard that it is full of super-helpful people who are more than willing to answer questions and help you figure out what you need personally!

Go ahead and visit www.mypreciouskid.com and let us know what you love? What do you wish she had available in the store?

Money Saving Monday - Intros and Laundry

So two days ago, I asked TCF what she thought about having a blog contributor, namely me. She has so kindly agreed and here I am! The goal of Money-Saving Monday will be to share a piece of advice, a technique I have learned, or just any random thing I do personally to save money.

But first, a little about myself! My name is Laura, and I'm a whopping 22 years old. I have a daughter who is nearly two and a husband who doesn't act much older. I run an in-home child care and sell Scentsy. Oh yeah, and I am cheap. I mean really cheap. I haven't bought new clothes for myself in over one year. I am a regular at Goodwill and a Craigslist troll. I love saving money, and I love that the money I do save helps my family afford things that we need.

This week, we had to buy a washer and a dryer. The washer and dryer we had both decided to keel over and die at the same time. We bought the set used for $200 almost four years ago. After browsing Craigslist for about a week and lugging our laundry to my in-laws to wash (we cloth diaper, by the way), I knew we needed to buy new. Luckily for us, the sales-lady was super helpful in not trying to up-sale us, and led us to exactly what we needed: a basic washer and a basic dryer. They are high-efficiency, which is a choice we made (less water is cheaper and better for the earth, folks!) together.

All that long introduction to get to here: How do I save money on the ever-looming laundry mountain in my home? Here are a few things that I personally do.

  • Cold water. Simple right? Seriously, I wash almost everything in cold water! I don't have to pay for the gas that it takes to heat my water and there is virtually no change in how the clothes are washed!
  • Do you have a high-efficiency washer? Do you buy that fancy-schmancy detergent that is supposed to go with it? DON'T! Use about 1/3 of the regular detergent that you have always used and you should be totally fine!
  • I don't do this all the time, my husband thinks it's ridiculous and stupid (rude!), but I have made my own detergent. There are lots of easy recipes online that can equal less than 5 cents per load! http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2008/04/09/making-your-own-laundry-detergent-a-detailed-visual-guide/ There is one of my favorite recipes, super simple, and I use an old plastic cat litter bucket to store the soap in!
  • Dryer balls. Have you heard about these? Dryer balls are generally made of wool yarn and felted over and over. Throw some in your dryer with your clothes and they absorb the moisture from the clothes so that they can dry faster. They also reduce static. These cost around $10 each, which is too steep for my pocket. My solution? I bought some wool yarn off of amazon (with my Swagbucks earnings, of course!) and made some for myself. Here is the tutorial I used, http://goodmama.typepad.com/goodmama/2008/05/make-your-own-wool-dryer-balls.html, it was super easy and much cheaper!
  • Not drying. Old-fashioned, I know, but it's one of those that's an oldie-but-goodie. I may reside in Oregon's City of Sunshine, but the weather here is not exactly ideal for outdoor drying. I have a drying rack in my garage that I snatched out of my parents' garage that I use for drying some clothes. I have also been known to line my couches and floor with soaking wet blankets and sweaters, but that's just me ;)

Have another tip? Let us know in the comments what you do to save money when you do laundry! Who knows, we could feature your tip in another blog post- and how special would that be?

-Merry savings to all and to all some spare change!

Beware the Ides of March! Gas Price protest, get involved

Well its getting to the point of insanity, there are predictions that gas prices will get up to $5 in some locations. A group on facebook has decided to try and show the gasoline people a thing or two in a silent protest.

Here is what they have to say
"FROM the 15th to 17th of MARCH, 2011 DO NOT BUY GASOLINE. Send the message to the Corporate Moguls that the African and Middle east conflicts are no reason to play games with fuel costs. Just like the message to Caesar
"BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH" they need to understand what it will be like for them when we can no longer afford it because they are raising the cost to high, what will you do when there is no demand? SO DO NOT BUY GAS the 15th. 16th, or 17th of March [IF YOU MUST BUY- buy only from your mom and pop places, not the corporations- NOT FROM: BP, AM/PM, EXXON/MOBIL, SHELL, ETC... PLAN AHEAD get gas the 14th and wait till the 18th]"

I have decided I will not be buying gas those days, its worth a shot to get the gas company to realise without us their prices wont get them anywhere. Want to take part, join this event, spread the word and dont buy gas the 15th-17th if you have to only buy from mom and pop gas stations.
